HS2 Works Notification: M42 closure between J9 and J10
We’re writing to let you know about some planned works that we will be carrying out in the area.
Balfour Beatty VINCI is working in partnership with HS2 Ltd and National Highways to install the Marston Box bridge across the M42 motorway.

Over the last 12 months we have been constructing Marston Box, which is the bridge that will carry the HS2 line over the M42 motorway between junction 9 (Dunton Interchange) and junction 10 (Tamworth Interchange). We will move the bridge into position using an innovative ‘box jacking’ technique, the first time this technique has been used on a motorway in the UK. This technique allows for the bridge to be installed during a short temporary closure of the M42 motorway between junctions 9 and 10.

To complete these works safely and efficiently we will install the following phased closure of the M42 motorway:

  • Southbound carriageway closure (Junctions 10 to 9) – from 9pm on Friday 23 December 2022 to 5am Tuesday 3 January 2023.
  • Northbound carriageway closure (Junctions 9 to 10) – from 5pm Saturday 24 December 2022 to 5am Tuesday 3 January 2023.
A clear signed diversion route will be in place over this period with advance signage in place to help remind motorists of the closure.
