Kings Bromley Whist Drives

Tuesday afternoon whist drives in the Village Hall will restart after Christmas on 8th January at the usual time, 1.30 for a prompt 2.00 pm start. They will continue weekly due to popular demand. If you have not been before how about giving it a try, we play friendly whist with a break for tea and coffee.
Entrance is £1.50 to cover the cost of hiring the Village Hall.

HS2 Community and Environment Fund Award

The Kings Bromley Parish Council and Village Hall Committee are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a contribution of £50,000 towards the Kings Bromley Village Hall Refurbishment project from the Phase One HS2 Community and Environment Fund.

This means that, with the generous donations already received from village organisations and residents, we are now able to go ahead with the tendering process.

Following earlier consultation with members of the local community, the plans have been amended to incorporate suggested improvements. The project will include a major upgrade of the kitchen and toilet facilities together with improvements to the lobby area.

We hope you will all be as pleased as we are that we can finally give the Village Hall the ‘facelift’ badly needed and we shall continue with our fund-raising activities through the sale of bricks and approaches to other funding sources, so that we can hopefully also make some improvements to the main hall area.

Kings Bromley Harmony Choir

The village choir gave a splendid concert in church on Saturday 8th December consisting of carols and a variety of songs, both Christmassy and non-seasonal. It was almost a year to the day since the choir gave their first public performance, also in church, and the number of choir members has grown substantially since then.

Despite very wet weather, there was a very good attendance to enjoy the afternoon. Kathryn, choir leader, had also brought two of her pupils along and they gave excellent solo performances. Tea and mince pies were served during the interval.

Thanks to Kathryn and the choir for an excellent concert and also to everyone who came to support them.

Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

Kings Bromley’s local appeal, including collection boxes from businesses in the district and donations from village organisations, is so far £3,573.54, an amazing achievement, believed to be a record for the village. The house-to-house collections raised £776.09 of the above total so thanks to all the collectors.

Kings Bromley Historians

Our first taste of ‘Christmas Past and Present’ was a view of Stonehenge. Mary Bodfish, our speaker, explained that not only was it a sacred site for the summer but also the winter solstice. The sun was fading in the sky and to ensure its return, evergreens and berries were used to represent returning life.

The Roman sun god was Saturn, hence their winter festival Saturnalia. For the Persians it was Mithras who was celebrated on December 25th, the shortest day according to the Julian calendar. When finally Christianity reached Rome, the Emperor Constantine decreed that Christians could worship openly and that the date of Christ’s birth be fixed as December 25th. In the orthodox church it is 6th January.

The tradition of the Christmas tree began with Queen Charlotte. It was also mentioned in the diary of the 13 year old future Queen Victoria “after dinner two trees hung with lights and ornaments”. Martin Luther decorated a fir tree with candles, a tradition carried on until 1903, when EverReady produced a string of electric tree lights. Much safer!

Father Christmas began life as Captain Christmas in a play by Ben Johnson. Also he appeared in early mummers plays together with the characters Mince Pie, Carol and Wassail. December 6th is the feast day of St Nicholas , whose name became Santa Claus.

Mary was a great theatrical orator and we all enjoyed her presentation.

The following day was Christmas lunch at the Royal Oak, where we all enjoyed an excellent meal. Allan Howard spoke of the highlights of last year and Lynne outlined considerable progress made in the Archive.

Following our Christmas walk on 30th December, our next meeting will be in the Village Hall on January 25th at 8.00 pm when Allan will talk about Major General Sir Ronald Bertram Lane. All are welcome.

Bin Stickers

Stickers to remind local households that black bin liners should not be used in blue bins.
Through the Lichfield and Tamworth Joint Waste Service, Lichfield District Council and Tamworth Borough Council are busy putting stickers on all blue bins across Lichfield, Burntwood, Tamworth and the surrounding areas.
The stickers warn local households that black bin bags should not be used in blue bins, and that bins will not be emptied if they are.
This comes after five truck-loads of recycling were recently turned away from the recycling sorting plant due to recycling being contaminated with black bin liners.
If a load of recycling is rejected, unfortunately it ends up being sent to landfill, which costs more, wastes other people’s recycling efforts, and is bad for the environment.
Councillor David Leytham, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Services, Leisure & Waste, said: “To reduce the chance of recycling being rejected by our sorting plant, we need to make sure our residents know what can and can’t go in blue bins.
“This is why we’re putting stickers on blue bin lids, so everyone is aware that we won’t empty the bin if it contains recycling in black bin bags.
“Our preference is for recycling to be loose in your blue bin. However, if you want to bag it, please use a clear bag or simply empty the bag of recycling into your blue bin and then reuse the plastic bag.”

Village Hall Refurbishment latest

24/10/18 – A38 northbound Lane 1 leading to closure of Barton exit and entry slips

26/10/18 – Closure of A38 northbound from Alrewas to Barton including Dogshead Lane and Wychnor bridges

Kings Bromley Voluntary Car Share Scheme

Kings Bromley Voluntary Car Share Scheme
Parishioners may not know that there is a scheme in place in the village whereby those without transport can ring a volunteer to see if they are able to transport them to the doctors, dentist, hospital etc. If you would like to know more about this please contact the Parish Clerk in the first instance by calling 07751603031. He will then put you in touch with the local coordinator.
Call for more volunteers.
At present there are around 8 volunteers with a further 3 recruits recently offering their services. More drivers are required. If you feel you have a few hours spare on the odd day then please put you name forward. To give you some idea the service was used last month on around 17 occasions so this is not a large commitment. Again contact the clerk on the number above.

Closure of Town Hill B5016

There has been much concern over this and the closure of the 812 bus route. The Parish Council has asked Cllr. Julia Jessel, the County Councillor for the Barton Area to see what can be done. This is her reply:

Dear Alan,

Richard Rayson (County Highways Dept.) is meeting with Amey to see if the 6 month period can be shortened and also if at times single file traffic can be allowed with traffic light control. In my temporary absence I have asked him the let the Parish Councils know if any improvements can be achieved.

Also I am waiting to hear back from the MD at Midland Classic regarding possible diversions to the bus route rather than stopping altogether.

A38 road closures

We (Kier) will be having closures on the A38 southbound for the next 4 nights, which will involve using the A515 as the diversion route. Hours of work will be 9pm to 6am and this will be for the signage work that has been taking place along the A38.

A dedication service, attended by Angela Lewis of the Fields in Trust organisation, took place
on Saturday 11 th September at 11.00 am on the Village Hall car park.
Centenary Fields, in partnership with the Royal British Legion, secures recreational spaces
throughout the UK in perpetuity to honour the memory of the millions of people who lost
their lives in World War I. Kings Bromley Parish Council, along with the Lichfield Diocesan
Trust and the National Playing Fields Association, has drawn up a Deed of Dedication to
agree that the playing field behind the Village Hall be secured as such a Centenary Field in
Trust – which can now never be used for any other purposes.

For a trial period until Christmas it has been decided to hold these Whist Drives every week
instead of fortnightly. From 2 nd October, the Whist Drive will be held in Kings Bromley
Village Hall. New members are always welcome, just come along on the day.
Time 1.30 pm for a prompt 2.00 pm start. Entrance fee £1.50 includes a cup of tea/coffee
and biscuit at half time.
Kings Bromley Art Group
This new group meets in the Village Hall on alternate Mondays from 1.30 to 3.30 pm. New
members very welcome, advanced or beginners. Bring your own project in any medium to
work on. This is not a taught class but we aim to share ideas and support one another in a
friendly way.

Live and Local Theatre, Thursday 11 th October
Live and Local theatre group will perform their latest production ‘Honey” at the Village Hall

Wednesday Club

On September 5th we set out on our summer outing to Shrewsbury and our trip was a great success. The weather was good, our first stop was at Dobbies Garden Centre for morning coffee and we then continued to Shrewsbury. We alighted our coach by the river and went to book a trip on the Sabrina for later in the day. Maps of the town and attractions were readily available, there were plenty of places to eat and a super Market Hall open 6 days a week. Some headed to town, others visited the castle and museum or Quarry Park to see The Dingle Garden – a project of the late Percy Thrower when he was head gardener. A very pleasant day was had by all.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday October 3rd at 2.30pm when our speaker Marion Baldwin will talk about “Hats.”

Kings Bromley WI

The meeting in September saw the WI enjoy hearing all about “The Living Churchyard”, a talk and slideshow by Ruth Williams.

Ruth enjoys looking around churchyards and doesn’t find them morbid. She told us how she joined a historical group and within several years became a judge for the Lichfield Diocese. This role led her to visit a huge area of the district judging churchyards and take some very professional photographs. These she shared with us in the form of a slideshow when we learned about the eco systems and habitats found in a churchyard. Centuries ago the churchyard would have been a social hub for the parish, holding fairs and festivals . The north side of a churchyard was seen as being inhabited by the devil and some would even have a brewhouse and make their own beer to sell at these fairs and festivals. The ladies heard all about the flora and fauna and wildlife to be found in a churchyard.

The ladies congratulated our members Florence Coxon and Margaret Smith for winning the County doubles bowls tournament. They played at Little Stone, and won with a terrific 22-18 for those in the know. Well done ladies, we look forward to seeing the rose bowl trophy . We have the coach booked for our trip in November to see the Calendar Girls play by Gary Barlow ” The Girls”, and lunch has been arranged at an Italian restaurant before the show. The meeting closed with a raffle and social time and we meet again on 4th October.

Weight Restricted Turns in Kings Bromley Parish

Traffic heavier than 7.5 tonnes travelling from the North (from Yoxall) on the A515 will not be able to turn left onto the A513 or into Woodend Lane.
Traffic heavier than 7.5 tonnes travelling from the East along the A513 (from Alrewas) will not be able to turn right onto the A515
Traffic heavier than 7.5 tonnes travelling from the East along Woodend Lane will not be able to turn right onto the A515.

The restrictions will be temporarily removed when traffic is diverted from the A38 due to accidents or roadworks.

As a Parish Council, we always expected that any such orders would exempt farm vehicles or vehicles making local deliveries. This will not be the case.

Parishioners will know that Kings Bromley Parish Council has campaigned for years for weight limits on the A515 and A513.

This proposal will, if enfored properly by the Police, reduce some HGV traffic through the village, but it is not the full weight limit that we wish for and the fact that it applies to farm vehicles and local deliveries and pick ups will, we believe, cause chaos as these vehicles will use country roads and attempt to turn in inappropriate places.

We will monitor the effectiveness of the restrictions and believe that that will be clear after 6 months.

Along with Yoxall and Draycott in the Clay Parish Councils, Kings Bromley Parish Council will now step up its campaign for a weight limit on the A515.

Options Trent Acres

Our open day at Trent Acres is on Friday 28th September @ 1:30pm, it is a Macmillan coffee event and visitors will be able to find out a lot more information regarding our service and they can meet all of the young people who are currently residing at the care home and attending the school.

Options Trent Acres offers education and residential care to boys and girls aged between 8 and 18 years with a range of complex needs, autism and associated learning disabilities. Options Trent Acres provides a highly structured and supportive environment which supports our children to manage their behaviour and develop personal care, social interaction and independence skills. The service is able to educate children with autism and complex needs, including emotional and cognitive impairment due to early life trauma and learning difficulties. This is achieved through an integrated care model incorporating the skills and expertise within our education and clinical teams. This model enables us to meet children’s individual needs and enables children to develop within an appropriate peer group.

Options Trent Acres is situated on a 12 acre site which provides a wide range of facilities and services within the homes and throughout the site. These services are designed to complement the aims of the school and the objectives for the young people.

Gardening Guild

At the August meeting, the speaker for the evening was Kevin Reynolds whose subject was ‘The Devil’s Darning Needle – an introduction to Dragonflies’. An expert on bats, Kevin also has a great interest in dragonflies and considers them to be the largest and most spectacular insects in the UK, being supreme flyers and predators. Dragonflies are a very old species, with fossils dating back to more than 200 million years ago showing that the insects used to be much bigger with wing spans up to 3ft across. Kevin showed some wonderful photos, most of which he had taken himself, illustrating the differences between dragonflies and damselflies. The fascinating life cycle of the dragonfly was explained; the insects are voracious carnivores with interesting mating techniques.
The next meeting will take place on 17th October, when Jeff Bates will be hosting a question and answer session on seasonal gardening.

Card Sale

The next Card Sale will be held at the Village Hall on Saturday morning, 15th September from
10.30 am until 12.00 noon. The usual range of items will be available; birthday cards, cards for many other occasions, wrapping paper, gifts, serviettes, postcards, bottle bags, notelets, hand-crafted cards and much more, all at bargain prices. A variety of Christmas cards will also be available.

Entry is FREE, everyone welcome. Do come along and have a free cup of coffee and biscuits and a chat with friends after you browse.

Harvest lunch

This year’s Harvest lunch will commence at 1.00 pm on Saturday 6th October in the Village Hall. The meal will be similar to that of previous years and tickets will soon be available at £7 or £4 for under 13s. Numbers are limited so if you don’t want to miss it, please contact Gill or Glen Wright on 472622 to reserve your seat.

Ride and Stride

The annual Ride and Stride takes place this year on Saturday September 8th. Participants are sponsored by family and friends to visit as many churches as they can between 10 am and 6 pm. In 2017 137 churches took part in Staffordshire and 77 cyclists and walkers were sponsored. A total of £9047 was raised and gift aid will increase this amount. The money is used to make grants to churches for repairs and essential maintenance. Half the money raised by each cyclist/walker is returned to their home church.
If cycling or walking is too strenuous for you, you can still take part travelling by public
transport or car.
We need a rota of volunteers in church throughout the day to welcome visitors and sign their forms to prove they have called so, if you can spare just an hour on Saturday 8th September, please contact Glen Wright on 472622 for more details.

New dog waste bin

As part of our continuing efforts to eliminate dog fouling from the streets of Kings Bromley, the Parish Council has installed another dog bin. The new bin is situated in Manor Road opposite the Bowls Club (see photo). It is already being used.

May we ask dog walkers to continue to always pick up their dog’s waste and put in the bins provided or take it home. Thank you.

Bowling Club Coffee Morning

Kings Bromley Bowling Club extends a very warm welcome to all on Saturday 1st September between 10.00 am and 12 noon. Admission £1 includes coffee and light refreshments. There will be a raffle, cake stall and other side stalls.
For those who may be interested in joining the Bowling Club there will be an opportunity to try it out. We look forward to seeing you at Manor Park, next to the Nursing Home (postcode DE13 7JA), on 1st September.

Kings Bromley WI

The WI do not hold a members meeting during August; however that’s not say we haven’t been busy. The Village Show did not have the best of summer weather and we sadly lost our pretty pink gazebo in the high wind, yet we still made a grand sum of just over £440. This will fund our outings and events throughout next year. The stall had a variety of cakes, jams and splendid raffle prizes and the stall itself looked spectacular in the traditional bright pink and mauve. The prizes and baked cakes were all donated by WI members and gratefully received. All the raffle prizes have now been collected.

The now traditional cream tea at the Royal Oak was splendid and 15 ladies enjoyed the afternoon with a lovely array of cakes, scones and sandwiches. This year we themed the event in recognition of the suffragettes and celebrated 100 years since women received the vote. Many ladies wore sashes and rosettes in honour of the suffragettes.

The ladies continue to run a craft and social group at the Royal Oak on the 3rd Thursday of the month from approximately 2pm and this is open to all who might like to join in. There is no fee but please bring your own projects and money for refreshments. The next members’ meeting will be at the village hall on 6th September from 7.30pm and if ladies haven’t already paid for the “The Girls ” in November, £20 for the ticket and coach is now due.

Kings Bromley Wednesday Club

On August 1st 34 members of the Wednesday Club enjoyed Cream Tea at Mabel’s. The arrival of scones, cream and jam sparked the inevitable debate over what goes first the cream or the jam?! Cream first or jam first – everyone appeared to enjoy their tea – and the chocolate coated strawberries were lovely. Our thanks to the staff at Mabel’s for a very enjoyable afternoon.

At the end of the afternoon the Chair thanked all those who had helped with the Wednesday Club stall at the Kings Bromley Show and reported that the gazebo had, against all the odds, withstood the strong gusts of wind blowing across the show ground!

Members were reminded that our next meeting on September 5th will be a trip to Shrewsbury and that the coach will depart from The Grange at 9.30am. There will be stop for coffee at Dobbies Garden Centre, Gailey. The coach will leave Shrewsbury at 4.30pm.

A38 roadworks delayed

I just wanted to make you all aware that we have had to defer the upcoming work on the A38 signs. Our previous start date of Monday, 6 August has now moved. We’re currently looking at starting this work Monday, 20 August 2018.
Start of works: Monday, 20 August 2018*
End of works: Friday, 22 September 2018*
Hours of work: 9pm to 6am Monday to Friday
*Please note that all our planned roadworks are subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
Detail of works
We’ll be replacing signs that have reached the end of their serviceable life. The new signs will comply with current standards and will improve visibility of the signs, especially at night and in poor weather conditions. Those sign that require illumination will also have new LED lighting units installed, which use less electricity. Replacing the signs will improve this section of the A38 with clearer signing, which will be easier to read.

Work will be done in 3 phases. We’ll be working mainly using lane closures. However road closures will be required on either the northbound or southbound carriageway. The map below shows the 3 diversions that will be in place, as agreed with Staffordshire County Council.
Phase 1
A38 northbound and southbound from Swinfen roundabout to Wood End Lane. This will require 1 northbound road closure and 2 southbound road closures as well as lane closures.
Phase 2
A38 northbound and southbound between Wood End Lane and Alrewas junction. This will require 2 northbound road closures and 1 southbound road closure as well as lane closures.
Phase 3
A38 northbound and southbound between Alrewas junction and Toyota Island. This will require 2 northbound road closures and 2 southbound road closures as well as lane closures.

Kings Bromley Show

The annual village show on Saturday 28th July was a huge success attracting visitors from all over the county and beyond. Despite some challenging weather conditions later in the day, everyone had a fabulous day. Funds raised will go to support various village organisations.

Many thanks go to all who helped at the Show, or during the week setting up and clearing up afterwards. Particular thanks go to Kirsten Harber who co-ordinated the whole team throughout the year. And thanks to all who came along to support us!

Reverend Ty Leyland Retirement

Reverend Ty Leyland retires as Rector of Kings Bromley and the Ridwares and on Saturday 23rd June a party was given in the Village Hall for Ty and his wife Viv. They were collected from the Rectory by Roger Price in a vintage open-top Morris car and driven in style to the village hall. They were greeted by about 150 villagers who shared afternoon tea with them.

The church choir sang a humorous song about the couple, written especially for the occasion and then Glen Wright, Churchwarden, gave a short tribute thanking Ty for his 19 year’s ministry in the parish. Viv was given a basket of flowers and the couple were presented with a very generous cheque from the parishioners in recognition of his service. Rev Ty then gave a speech of thanks.

Bowling Club Coffee Morning

Kings Bromley Bowling Club extends a very warm welcome to all on Saturday 1st September between 10.00 am and 12 noon. Admission £1 to include coffee and light refreshments. There will be a raffle, cake stall and other side stalls.
For those who may be interested in joining the Bowling Club there will be an opportunity to try it out. We look forward to seeing you at Manor Park, next to the Nursing Home (postcode DE13 7JA) on 1st September.

Postmistress Retires

On Friday 28th June, Annabel Watkins opened the ‘broom cupboard’ in the Village Hall for the last time as Postmistress. She has been running this village service since August 2004 and formerly ran the Post Office in the Alrewas Road shop.

As a mark of appreciation the Parish Council presented her with a bouquet of flowers. We have yet to hear from the Post Office when, or whether, a replacement will be found.
