Kings Bromley WI

The WI do not hold a meeting during the month of August; however that’s not to say we haven’t been busy.

The village show stall was looking splendid with the array of homemade cakes, chutneys and jams, all donated by our members and friends. The show stall is our main fundraiser, making £390 towards the cost of speakers and events for the coming year. The WI held a raffle on show day and these are the winning prizes and tickets:- Tracey Green 261, cheese and wine basket, D Smith Green 340, grocery set, Elaine Pink 250, Avon set, Viv Leyland Pink 105, Crown Derby, Joan Penfold Pink 578, Monty Don, Mary Simmons White 784, picnic hamper and Bev White 703 bathroom basket. A BIG THANK YOU to our members for their donations and time volunteering at the stall another successful show day.

The WI held an afternoon tea at the Royal Oak Pub on Thursday 10th August to show appreciation to our members and to enhance the resolution passed in June on Alleviating Loneliness. We shared our friendship and enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, cakes, pastries and scones, jam and cream plus large quantities of tea were consumed. We have a Facebook page with lots of photos to view of the splendid afternoon.

We meet regularly at the Royal Oak on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 2.30pm; we hold a monthly craft group. If you are interested just turn up with your own projects for an informal get together and enjoy a chat and a cuppa too.

The next members meeting shall be held at the village hall on 7TH September on the “life of a lingerie designer” from 7.30pm.

Wednesday Club:

On 2nd August 39 members of the Wednesday Club sat down for their annual Cream Tea held this year at Mabel’s, Curborough. After welcoming everyone Anne thanked all those who had helped with our stall at the Kings Bromley Show. The amount raised this year was £366.17. A very good result considering the weather. Anne then announced that Vera Wilson had decided to step down from the committee and thanked Vera for her many years as committee member, secretary and chair. Finally, members were reminded about the outing to Barmouth on 6th September and informed of the new departure time – 8.30am from The Grange.
Judging by the volume of chatter and laughter everyone had a very enjoyable afternoon. The Cream Tea was delicious and the staff at Mabel’s very attentive frequently re-filling teapots and providing additional jam. Only one member it seems was disappointed – disappointed that there was nothing to complain about!! A great afternoon!

Reminder:
September 6th: Outing to Barmouth. Non- members welcome.
October 4th: “Encounters of the Rich and Famous” A talk by Mr. D. Tamea.

Gardening Guild

Gardening Guild members enjoyed a visit to the Dorothy Clive Garden in July; the weather was perfect for walking around the extensive grounds and members who already knew the garden appreciated seeing the changes which had taken place, including a glasshouse with exotic species and an area with edible plants. Everyone enjoyed sitting in the sunshine enjoying refreshments in the cafe at the end of the visit.
At the next meeting in the Village Hall on Monday 21 August, Mike Byford will be talking about ‘Hellebores, the National Collection’.

Kings Bromley Co-op

In the early hours of Wednesday morning there was an unsuccessful ram-raid by masked thieves in an attempt to steal the cash machine at the Co-op. While still in shock, the Co-op staff rallied to quickly clear up the mess and organise the reconstruction of the demolished wall, following its inspection by a structural engineer. Amazingly, 24 hours later, the shop opened again as usual at 7.00 am. Well done to all the staff for their resilience and let’s hope the perpetrators get caught as soon as possible.

Best Kept Village Result

Published 9 August 2017

At the award ceremony, on 7th August in Eccleshall Community Centre, Dennis O’Dea accepted, on behalf of Kings Bromley, the Best Kept Village award for the Lichfield and Cannock Chase Area. Forty six villages spread over five areas entered the competition this year; there were 12 in our area. Villages are divided into small and large villages; we won best small village, Norton Canes won best large village. We were then judged against Norton Canes and won the overall trophy, which we won – thereby getting to retain the ‘totem pole’. The competition is run by the Community Council of Staffordshire and in the Lichfield/Cannock Chase area is sponsored by the Leavesley Group on behalf of the National Memorial Arboretum.

Thanks to all who in the village who have kept their front gardens so neat and who have kept the streets so clean. I have been particularly impressed this year with the hanging baskets and the effort made by the Co-op and Royal Oak. The churchyard continues to impress, thanks to the Churchyard Team, as do the public areas: the Showfield, thanks to the Show Committee, the War Memorial and the Jubilee seat area and Village Hall, thanks to the Gardening Guild . Thanks also to the Richard Crosse School whose pupils’ posters have been displayed in the Village Hall windows. The Parish Council organises the event.

It was fitting that Dennis accepted the award on our behalf as he works tirelessly around the village.

Poor road drainage on Alrewas Road

Published 2 August 2017

Recently a report was made to the parish council about the poor drainage along parts of Alrewas Road. The channels are full of detritus and some road grids blocked. This was reported to Staffordshire Highways (Amey their contractor) and this is their reply:

Highways Issue Inspected – Fault Report 4087463

This is an update to your enquiry dated 27/07/2017 in relation to Alrewas Road .
A highways inspector has now visited the site and added the following notes to the report:

Full inspection of the gullys along Alrewas road, there is some weed growth and small amount of surface water in places but all gullys are clear and accepting water, the gullys are routinely cleaned and emptied, no actionable defects therefore at time of inspection.

Kind regards
The Highways Team

HS2 Information Events and PC EGM

Published 1 August 2017

There will be a HS2 Information event at the village hall on 2nd August from 2pm to 8pm. This is another chance to hear first hand how this project will affect your village.
There will be an EGM of the Parish Council in the Village Hall on Monday 7th August at 7.30pm. This will take the form of representatives of HS2 answering a set of previously notified questions on their recently published plans for HS2 (2a). The public can attend as at any Parish Council meeting and ask questions of the Parish Council at the public forum which lasts for 5 minutes at the start of the meeting – extendable at the Chairman’s discretion. After that the public can listen to proceedings.
The set of questions that we have prepared, after having met with the HS2 action group and listened to the concerns of parishioners, is listed below. As can be seen these are aimed at trying to understand what the plans mean and how the impact of the works can be minimized. We still retain the hope that, once the financial and environmental cost of HS2 and its meagre benefits are appreciated by our politicians, it will be scrapped. But in the meantime we are working on mitigating its effects.
The answers that we receive to these questions from HS2 will be published on this site. Questions here HS2 questions (83.2 Kb)
